Considerations

The Roadmap is kept healthy by continuously validating the priorities in the Roadmap with our stakeholders. Our engineering capability constrains our ability to deliver the priorities in the Roadmap in the timeframes established by the Roadmap. Given the priorities in the Roadmap and our capacity to deliver them we should always focus on delivering the best possible value to the business by consistently working in priority order.

Teams also have the responsibility of sustaining the effective operation of their solutions. This work is in addition to delivery of the priorities of the Roadmap. Correctly balancing Rate of Delivery and Quality of Service is a key concern for teams supporting the product.

Delivery Aligned To Priorities And Timescales

The immediate priorities of the Roadmap are being delivered at a rate that will enable them to be complete within the most immediate timeframe of the Roadmap.

The ranking and ordering of the Roadmap is continuously reflected in the Backlog.

Product teams respect priorities in the Roadmap when planning their work. Leadership respects the autonomy of the product teams and avoids imposing additional work. Teams establish and deliver their own work priorities.

Amber

Delivery Partially Aligned To Roadmap And Timescales

The immediate priorities of the Roadmap are being delivered but at a rate that will not complete them within the most immediate timeframe of the Roadmap.

The Backlog does not always reflect the ranking and ordering of the Roadmap. This means that additional work, outside the priorities in the Roadmap, is being addressed.

The additional work has a material impact on the ability to deliver within the most immediate timeframe of the Roadmap. This additional work may have arisen because the team has chosen to address it or because it has been imposed on the team by leadership or other stakeholders.

Delivery Not Aligned To Roadmap Or Timescales

The Roadmap has little apparent influence on the priorities and work of the product teams.

It is difficult for stakeholders to understand the choices and priorities of the team and how these relate to their needs.
